MOBILE FOOD PANTRIES

Helping Partner Charities

The Challenge

As the food industry has moved toward producing more fresh and frozen than canned and boxed foods, many of Tarrant Area Food Bank's Partner Agencies have been hard-pressed to expand their capacity to store refrigerated and frozen products.  The Food Bank has also had to work smarter and faster to distribute the ever growing amount of fresh foods it receives.

One Solution

One way to distribute more fresh and frozen product more efficiently is to operate a pantry on wheels.

Tarrant Area Food Bank loads a refrigerated truck with up to 20,000 pounds of fresh and frozen foods along with some nonperishable groceries and drives it to a site hosted by a Partner Agency. With the help of volunteers, we unload the truck and distribute the food directly to people determined eligible by the Partner Agency.  Anywhere from 200 to over 500 families are served at each charity's site.

The kinds of food offered include fresh fruits and vegetables, juices, milk, yogurt, baby food, eggs and frozen foods such as chicken, beef, sauces, soups and desserts.
